Allow your plants to die back in the fall. In November, all of your new perennials (except ornamental grasses) should be cut down to two inches above the mulch. Summer and fall flowering shrubs are also pruned in the late fall.
Be sure to protect any plant which may be damaged by snow and ice falling off the roof. After your plants are cut down, apply a generous application of Preen to all the landscape areas.
Weed Control: All flower and landscape beds should receive a generous application of Preen early in the spring. Any perennial weeds should be killed with perennial herbicide, Round-Up, before new mulch is applied. Add fresh mulch where needed. You should not be able to see any exposed soil in your planting areas.
Fertilization: We recommend a granular, slow-release fertilizer be applied according to label directions early in the spring. Rhododendron, Hydrangea, and many evergreens like an acidic fertilizer. You can buy a box of this powder at any retail outlet. New plantings also enjoy Miracle Grow applied once every two weeks during the growing period. Patio pots need quite a bit of fertilizer to continue looking good. A little Miracle Grow once a week should be sufficient.
