Dead-Heading: Picking or cutting off spent flowers encourages your plants to produce more flowers. If you cut off spent flowers, the plants will not spend their energy on seed production, and your plants will use that energy to produce strong root systems.
Bug Control: Our worst bug enemy in Michigan is the Japanese beetle. When you see beetles on your plants, an application of liquid Sevin will get rid of them. We recommend using Bayer Advanced Gardener granules to control spider mites and aphids.
Fungus: Fungus appears as black spots on leaves, leaf drop, or a milky white powder on leaves. To avoid fungus, refrain from watering the leaves of plants, especially in humid weather. Should fungus appear, spray a garden fungicide on the leaves.
Watering: Water your new trees, shrubs, and perennials deeply to encourage the roots to grow deep into the soil. Fill the well around your new trees once a week. Nine-Bark, Astillbe, Hydrangea, Siberian Iris, ferns, and annual beds need more water and should not be allowed to dry out. Any spraying of chemicals and/or watering should be done in the morning before the sun is beating down on the leaves.
